Michigan's Josephine Ford Cancer Center gynecologic oncologists treat more than 275 women annually with invasive cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian, cervical, uterine, vulva and vaginal cancers. They also provide treatment for gestational trophoblastic disease and preinvasive lesions of the lower genital tract.
The Division of Gyncologic Oncology is unique in that gynecologic oncologists provide total patient care from diagnosis to follow-up. Patients are seen at one place by the same team of providers, and if necessary, the team can consult with other Josephine Ford Cancer Center experts in medical and radiation oncology.
Surgery plays a primary role in treatment of many gynecologic malignancies. Department specialists have a strong expertise in this area, including proficiency in laparoscopic approaches. Their goal is to optimize survival while preserving the best quality of life for each cancer patient.
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy frequently are used as adjuncts to surgical treatment. New chemotherapeutic agents available here have contributed to improved outcomes in advanced gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. Our gynecologic oncologists are testing immunotherapy in selected patients under the protocol treatment.
Gynecologic Oncology Service collaborates with specialists in the Department of Radiation Oncology to offer state-of-the-art radiation treatment for gynecologic cancers, including conventional external beam radiation and implant therapy (brachytherapy).
Through the Department’s participation in the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the Southwest Oncology Group, patients have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials of new, potentially more effective treatments. Patients are encouraged to participate in the several in-house study protocols that are in progress at any given time.
Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy delivery are centralized at Henry Ford Hospital. For the convenience of patients, pretreatment and follow-up appointments may be scheduled at several Henry Ford Medical Centers.
Gynecologic Oncologists work closely with the referring physician in the management of each case and, whenever possible, return patients to their own physician for follow-up and ongoing care.
