Patients at Henry Ford Hospital have access to the latest technology used to target cancerous areas with radiation therapy. This radiation therapy eradicates the cancerous cells. Henry Ford Hospital is one of only a few hospitals in the country to have this technology.
The newest technology can target a tumor to within .5 millimeters. This precision limits the radiation to the cancerous tumor only, leaving nearby healthy organs and healthy tissue untouched. This new technology allows our physicians to precisely position the patient so the radiation can get directly to the correct spot. Further increasing its accuracy is the ability to track the tumor's movement within organs, such as the lung, so that the maximum dose of radiation reaches its target. For instance, because patients are breathing during the procedure and the lungs are moving with each breath, the new machine accommodates for those changes and maintains its precision on the tumor. Unlike other systems in which treatments can take more than an hour, the high-dose delivery system facilitates rapid radiosurgery treatments that are more convenient and non-invasive for the patient, usually only taking about 20 minutes.
