Josephine Ford Cancer Center ophthalmologists treat patients with primary and metastatic tumors of the eyelid, orbit, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, retina and optic nerve. They have extensive experience with a wide range of both common and rarer opthalmic cancers.
Diagnosis is based on a careful clinical history and physical examination, supplemented when appropriate by the following tools: ultrasonography, CT, MRI, fluorescein angiography, fundus photography and other specialized testing. The goals of treatment are to preserve or restore vision and appearance whenever possible. Therapy is customized and can include photocoagulation, cryotherapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
Ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery plays a major role in treatment of many ophthalmic tumors. Our surgeons work together with neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists and maxillofacial surgeons in treating some patients. Ocularists are available to craft artificial eyes as needed.
Through Josephine Ford Cancer Center ophthalmologists, patients have access to major clinical trials for ophthalmic cancer, including the National Eye Institute's Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study.
