Lung Cancer

The Henry Ford Lung Cancer Program is a national leader in providing patients the most advanced diagnostic studies and treatment therapies. With more than 500 patients treated each year, our lung cancer program is among the largest in Michigan. Significant advances have occurred in the treatment of lung cancer over the past decade, and Henry Ford remains at the forefront in helping patients with lung cancer, bronchial cancer, as well as other types of tumors of the lung or airway.

Customizing treatment to each patient's type of lung cancer and specific needs is vital in the battle against lung cancer. At Henry Ford a wide range of specialists work together to develop personalized treatment plans for each patient. The lung cancer team includes Pulmonary Medicine, Interventional Pulmonology, Radiology, Thoracic Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, and others, who collaborate from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up to provide each patient comprehensive care.

  • Dedicated lung cancer tumor board where individual cases are presented weekly to a group of specialists to determine the best treatment course.
  • The most comprehensive Interventional Pulmonology Program in Michigan and the Midwest, with more experience in the use of airway stents to treat lung cancer and benign lung disease, and the only lung specialists in Michigan who perform whole lung lavage for both lungs at the same time.
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for the treatment lung cancer. Patients typically have 4 treatment sessions versus 35-37 treatment sessions for traditional radiation therapy.
  • Experienced thoracic surgeons providing a range of surgical options for lung cancer including lobectomy and pneumonectomy.
  • Access to national clinical trials. In addition to our in-house protocols, our lung cancer experts participate in multiple National Institutes of Health-sponsored trials through the Radiation Oncology Group and the Southwest Oncology Group.
