Why VUI?

The reason is simple: Robotic prostate surgery started here.

The first robotic prostate surgery program in the United States was started by Mani Menon, M.D., at the Vattikuti Urology Institute in 2001. Today, the Institute's surgeons have performed 4,000 robotic surgeries, more than any other institution in the world.

The experience of Dr. Menon and his team allows them to individually design each case and more aptly address unforeseen complications. Our experience means that you will experience a better outcome.

Dr. Menon and his team have published more than 135 articles and editorials about robotic surgery in peer-reviewed journals, and their research has been cited in other studies more than 1,500 times. No other hospital has been published or cited more on the subject.

Time and time again, the field of Urology has turned to the Vattikuti Urology Institute for advancements.

  • Dr. Menon and his team were the first in the United States to perform robotic prostate surgery using the da Vinci® Surgical System, and subsequently developed the Vattikuti Institute Prostatectomy (VIP) practiced by institutions around the world.
  • The first outpatient robotic prostate surgery was performed by Dr. Menon in 2001. Dr. Menon's approach has helped thousands of men leave the hospital earlier to recover in the comfort of their own homes.
  • In 2002, Dr. Menon developed the Veil of Aphrodite Nerve-Sparing Procedure, an innovative technique which preserves essential nerves and results in better erectile function outcomes.
  • In January 2008, Dr. Menon developed an approach that allows the operation to be performed without leaving a catheter in the penis. More than 400 of our patients have undergone robotic prostatectomy without the discomfort of a urethral catheter.
  • In August 2008, a single incision robotic surgery (SIRS) nephrectomy was performed for the first time in Michigan and the second time in the United States, by Craig Rogers, M.D., director of Robotic Renal Surgery at the Vattikuti Urology Institute.

Hundreds of physicians travel from across the country and around the world to train with Dr. Menon. Former VUI physicians and fellows helped establish urologic robotic surgery programs at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell (Ash Tewari, M.D.), New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center (Ketan Badani, M.D.), and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Daniel Eun, M.D), among others.

Our program also has trained physicians from the Global Robotics Institute, Orlando; Cambridge University, Guy's Hospital, and the London Clinic, England; Hospital de Clinicas Caracas, Venezuela; Yongsei University Medical Center, Seoul, South Korea; Chinese University, Hong Kong; Singapore General Hospital; Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India; and Hospital San Rafaelle, Milan, Italy.
