The Human Voice-A Celebration of Sound

Henry Ford Event Shows Singers, Speakers How to Protect Vocal Health

For singers and public speakers, their voice is their livelihood. But many, especially singers, often fail to notice subtle changes to their voice that could have a negative effect on their vocal health.

On April 16 - World Voice Day - singers, speakers and others interested in learning how to care for their voice will have the chance to participate in "The Human Voice - A Celebration of Sound."

Hosted by Henry Ford Hospital, this educational event will teach participants about lifestyle changes that can influence the voice, how to properly warm-up the voice, and educate them about the medical and surgical options available for people with voice problems.

The event will feature special guests Betty Lane, a singing voice specialist who works at Michigan Opera Theatre, Vocal Pathways and Wayne State University, and John-Paul White, the Travis Professor of Music-Voice at Oakland University, along with several Henry Ford Hospital clinicians:

  • Dr. Glendon Gardner, Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, and Medical Center for the Performing Artist
  • Cindy Grywalski, Speech and Language Sciences and Disorders, Department of Neurology, and Medical Center for the Performing Artist
  • Dr. Alice Silbergleit, director of Speech and Language Sciences and Disorders, Department of Neurology, and Medical Center for the Performing Artist
  • Dr. Robert Stachler, Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and Medical Center for the Performing Artist
  • Dr. Kathleen Yaremchuk, chair of the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
