The Henry Ford Hospital Department of Radiology offers nine positions annually in our ACGME accredited Diagnostic Radiology Residency. The residency is a categorical five year residency with an integrated transitional year. The transitional year is done at Henry Ford Hospital, where there are 5 months of Internal Medicine floors, 1 month of Emergency Medicine, 2 electives (pulmonary or neurology consult and Ortho trauma clinic), 3 months of radiology. We offer a plethora of cases, with over 800,000 studies performed annually. The department operates in a nearly completely paperless, filmless environment with the exception of mammography, which is currently approximately 50% through its transition to digital mammography.
The department utilizes state of the art technology, and currently operates seven 64 slice CT scanners, one 16 slice scanner, two 4 slice scanners, and is installing two new dedicated 4 slice interventional CT scanners. Radiology residents have early exposure to cross-sectional interventional radiology during their first year of residency with a dedicated team of body interventionalists. The department also operates one 3T MRI, seven 1.5T MRIs, as well as a 1.0T open MRI. Two additional MRI scanners will be added shortly. Approximately 3-5 MR guided breast biopsies are performed each week.
We have a diverse staff of predominately fellowship trained staff radiologists, with subspecialized divisions of Breast Imaging, Neuroradiology, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Body Imaging, Pediatric Radiology, Thoracic Imaging, and Nuclear Medicine. Teaching responsibilities fall primarily on fellowship-trained radiologists. Our department is unique in that we are responsible for OB ultrasound, not a maternal-fetal division. We also have a Cardiac division, where we read the cardiac CTAs and cardiac MRIs in conjunction with the cardiologist, although the radiologist is ultimately responsible for all the dictations.
We have 24-hour staff coverage for call, all of whom are fellowship trained radiologists. Cases dictated independently by radiology residents overnight working in the emergency room are signed as final reports within one hour.
