Twelve months are spent in general genetics rotations which includes pediatric and adult genetics patients and Neurogenetics Clinic patients. Six months will be spent on this rotation each year.
Two months are spent on prenatal genetics rotations. During that rotation, the resident will also learn the principles of maternal serum screening in the HFH Maternal Serum Screening Program.
Two months are spent on the Cancer Genetics service.
One month is pent at Detroit medical Center participating in their metabolic Genetics Clinic which meets twice per week. This is combined with two weeks in the Detroit Medical Center Biochemical Genetics Laboratory.
Residents spend two months each in the Cytogenetics and DNA Diagnostic Laboratories at Henry Ford Hospital.
Residents have one month for an elective rotation which may be related to their area of interest such as pediatric genetics at Children's Hospital, or in another rotation.
Two months are reserved in the second year to concentrate on completion of research projects. However, our program has been modified to integrate time for research into many of the clinical and lab rotations.
The Genetics Resident is responsible for in-patient consults at Henry Ford Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital-Oakland with the senior staff on call. The resident will rotate with the genetic counselors or other fellows and cover every 2nd or 3rd week of consults. Fellows will not cover HFH consults while on lab rotations or while at CHM for Metabolic Clinic or during electives that are out of town. The fellow will not cover consults at Providence Hospital, Children's Hospital of Michigan or at St. Joseph Macomb Hospital.
During Lab rotations, the resident will be scheduled for one clinic or field clinic per week.
