Skin Discoloration

Dark skin can be supersensitive, and common skin disorders can lead to an increase in pigment that may last a long time.

Causes
Discoloration and brown spots are caused by acne, eczema, reactions to skin care products, and cuts, scrapes or burns. Early treatment of the underlying problem can prevent dark spots from developing or lesson the severity. Melasma, or "mask of pregnancy," also can cause darkening of the skin.

Treatment
Dermatologists at the Henry Ford Multicultural Dermatology Clinic can lighten dark spots and help even out a discolored complexion. Depending on your skin type and condition, treatment with chemical peels and prescription bleaching medication are options to fade pigment.

It is important to find a dermatologist experienced in treating dark skin, because inappropriate treatment approaches may actually make discoloration worse.
