State-of-the-art Surgical Procedures

The Division of Vascular Surgery at Henry Ford has a long history of innovation in surgery and providing advanced techniques to improve patient outcomes.

The traditional open method of surgery usually requires larger incisions to reach the area of the body requiring repair.

  • Minimally invasive surgeries make use of advanced technologies and equipment that allow the surgeon to repair the inside area of the body, just as in the standard open method, but using small punctures or incisions in the skin without the need to slice muscle or other healthy tissue.
  • Endovascular surgeries are minimally invasive catheter-based approaches that allow the surgeon to repair the diseased or clogged artery or vein via placement of mesh-wire stent devices (like little coiled umbrellas) to improve blood flow.
  • Robotic-assisted surgeries allow the surgeon to repair the body area using high-technology mechanics and imaging techniques. The benefits of minimally invasive, endovascular, and robotic-assisted surgeries include little to no blood loss during surgery, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.

Henry Ford Vascular Surgery provides the full range of state-of-the-art surgeries and became the first in Michigan, and currently the only site in the state, to provide robotic-assisted surgery for vascular disease.

In 2008, a new Hybrid Operating Room at Henry Ford Hospital, opened, offering the most advanced endovascular surgical suite for patients with vascular disease. Advanced imaging technology in the operating room allows on-site information with significantly less X-ray exposure, providing surgeons real-time details that result in more accurate treatment and safer, shorter procedures.

The Hybrid Operating Room means minimally invasive surgeries, endovascular interventional procedures, and traditional open procedures all can be treated in the surgical suite. Types of vascular surgery done with the advanced technology in this state-of-the-art operating room include:

  • Abdominal aneurysm stent grafts
  • Combined open and endovascular procedures
  • Complex peripheral artery interventional procedures
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic percutaneous vascular procedures
  • Thoracic aneurysm stent grafts
