Comprehensive Epilepsy Center

Founded in 1993, the Henry Ford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provides one of the nation's leading teams in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and seizure disorders. The Center has one of the largest teams in Michigan with eight epileptologists (neurologists with specialty training in epilepsy) for adult patients and one epileptologist for children. The team provides cutting edge diagnostic and treatment options including medical therapies, surgical therapies, and neurostimulation implant therapies. Specialty areas include epilepsy in women, epilepsy in the elderly, post-traumatic epilepsy, nonepileptic seizure disorders, and surgical treatment for epilepsy.

Henry Ford Hospital has been designated a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, the highest certification, in accordance with the National Association of Epilepsy Centers guidelines for patient care. The Ford team is internationally known for research using magnetoencephalography (MEG) and has a long history of collaboration with the Epilepsy Center of Michigan, the only center in the state affiliated with the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

The Henry Ford team focuses on pinpointing the cause of each patient's seizures and then designing an individualized treatment program to reduce and eliminate seizures. Some patients respond to modern anti-seizure medications, others may require use of newer medications offered in clinical trials, and other patients may require surgery or implantation of neurostimulation devices to help reduce or eliminate seizures.
