Stroke and Neurovascular Diseases Center

Brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid artery disease, intracranial atherosclerotic disease and other neurovascular diseases can lead to stroke. Stroke is an emergency medical condition caused by a disease process occurring in the vessels and arteries within the brain or those leading to the brain such as from the heart or carotid arteries in the neck. The Henry Ford Stroke and Neurovascular Center specializes in:

  • The prevention of stroke by diagnosis and treatment of diseases that can lead to stroke
  • The emergency treatment of all different types of stroke when they occur
  • The specialized hospital care for patients with stroke and neurovascular diseases
  • The outpatient treatment required for recovery after stroke, and
  • The development of brain neuroregeneration and other novel therapies aimed to help stroke patients and to prevent future stroke from occurring

Henry Ford's Stroke and Neurovascular Center has long been committed to advancing treatment and research of stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. Hallmarks of our Center are:

  • More than 20 years designated as a National Institutes of Health Stroke Center
  • Certified Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval recognizes hospitals that make exceptional efforts to deliver better stroke care.
  • Certified Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting Center by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS)
  • Nationally recognized stroke neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuro-endovascular specialists collaborate on the treatment of nearly 1,000 stroke patients a year and have one of the largest experiences in the United States treating brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations.
  • With one of the premier neuroregenerative laboratory research centers in the world, Henry Ford Hospital is home to two NIH Program Project grants in the field of stroke and brain restorative research therapies.
  • Henry Ford began providing the first clinical trials for neuroregeneration therapies for stroke patients in 2006.
  • Henry Ford ranks in the top five percent in the United States of all NIH-funded institutions for stroke research.
