Our emergency medicine residency at Henry Ford Macomb is relatively young. We graduated our first resident in 2007 and our first full class in 2008. We have developed a very strong program over a short period of time due to the dedication of our residents, faculty and support of Henry Ford Hospital, known for their tradition of commitment to medical education. Ours is a four-year program comprised of 20 residents all of which participated in the Osteopathic match.
This training program is designed to prepare the resident to achieve clinical expertise in emergency medicine while at the same time gaining a solid academic foundation. The graduate will have extensive experience in clinical emergency medicine in order to display competence in treating a wide variety of patients in the emergency room. At the end of training, the resident will be skilled at recognizing life-threatening emergencies and be an expert at initiating life support measures in a rapid and efficient manor. Ultimately, the resident will be able to diagnose, stabilize and manage any patient presenting to the emergency room with confidence and competence. Once the resident gains these clinical skills they will be exposed to the administrative aspect of this field of practice so that they may begin developing the leadership skills necessary to effectively manage an emergency department. Based on the premise that all physicians are called upon to teach during the span of their careers, the program will utilize a number of techniques to help the resident acquire the skills necessary to be an effective educator at the bedside as well as the supervision of procedures.
We have a SonoSite ultrasound machine dedicated to the emergency department, an interosseous introducer drill, Airtraq intubation devises and we recently acquired a Glidescope machine. The residency owns two mannequins, one to teach central line insertion and another for chest tube insertion. We use a paperless system in our emergency department supported by Cerner supplying physician order entry as well as electronic medical record.
There is a medical library on-site with computers available for any research needs. We also have a librarian, Juliet Mullenmeister, available to assist with any literature search or questions you might have. We have access to the Sladen Library through Henry Ford Hospital through which we can access nearly every medical journal in publication.
This program is specifically designed to ensure that the resident will be successful in meeting the challenges of each phase of education to which they are exposed. The PGY3s and PGY4s will be given graded and progressive supervision, responsibility for medical students and off-service rotators. Some say that the most effective means of learning is by teaching and our residents have the opportunity to educate, mentor, and explore the methods they find most advantageous.
Henry Ford Macomb Mission Emergency Medicine Residency: Our mission is to teach residents the full spectrum of emergency medicine. During their four years, we will prepare the residents to master the cognitive, interpersonal, and procedural skills of clinical emergency medicine while incorporating osteopathic principles and practice. Our focus will include educating others in the specialty, evaluating information in an evidence-based manner, and performing research.
Message from Program Director:
Welcome! And thank you for choosing Henry Ford Macomb Hospital for your residency training. I appreciate the commitment you have made to us and our program and vow to provide you with the multifaceted training necessary to become a competent, compassionate and respected ER physician. This is a relatively new position for me yet what I lack in experience, I make up for with enthusiasm and adaptability. I encourage your thoughts and ideas and understand that this program will continue to grow only through innovative change. I want you all to participate in this process and develop a sense of ownership of this program versus viewing your residency as a means to an end. more...
