An Electromyogram (EMG) is a test, in two parts: Nerve Conduction Study, which measures the ability of specific nerves to transmit electrical impulses or messages to muscles; and Needle Electrode Exam, which measures the electrical activity in muscles.
An EMG measures the electrical activity in your nerves and muscles to help detect the presence, location and extent of nerve or muscle disorders. An EMG helps doctors distinguish the cause of the weakness or spasm, and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
