Lung Transplantation

Medical Directors: Lisa Allenspach, M.D., and Allen Betensley, M.D.
Surgical Director: Hassan Nemeh, M.D.

The Henry Ford Lung Transplant Program performs both single- and double-lung transplants for a wide range of respiratory disorders including emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. Our lung transplant program began in 1994 and our patient outcomes are well above the national average, with the majority of Henry Ford lung transplant patients recovering to lead active, normal lives.

The Lung Transplant Team at Henry Ford Hospital includes highly skilled specialists in pulmonary medicine, cardiothoracic transplant surgery, infectious diseases, critical care medicine, pathology, pulmonary rehabilitation, nutrition, social work, and psychology. This multidisciplinary approach is highly coordinated, and allows for complete management of patient needs before, during, and after transplantation. Special services include the FAST Track program in which qualifying lung transplant candidates may have the entire pre-transplant evaluation completed in two weeks or less.

We know the diagnosis of advanced lung disease is traumatic. The Henry Ford Lung Transplant Program provides each patient and family with personalized and expert care along the entire spectrum of the transplant experience and has a successful track-record in restoring patients to a high quality of life.
