The Henry Ford Kidney Transplant Program, first started in 1968, has long been one of the nation's most successful programs with patient outcomes that consistently meet or surpass national rates. The Henry Ford team has transplanted thousands of kidneys, utilizing innovative procedures to help patients with irreversible kidney disease who without a transplant would be dependent on dialysis. A FAST Track process is in place to evaluate kidney transplant candidates within one to two weeks, with 90 percent completed within 24 hours.
We are one of only a few centers in the United States to perform both standard laparoscopic and robotic-assisted laparoscopic kidney removal. With a focus on patient safety and treatment innovations, our team became the first in Michigan in 2008 to use robotic surgery to remove a diseased kidney through a single incision. Robotic technology is revolutionizing kidney surgery, first making living-donor kidney transplants safer and easier on the donor and now helping to provide safer surgeries for patients with diseased kidneys.
The Henry Ford Kidney Transplant Program provides both deceased-donor and living-donor kidney transplants as well as simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplants. Our program is the only one in Michigan with a high-risk kidney transplant protocol for patients who are unlikely elsewhere to receive a transplant due to a previous transplant or blood transfusion.
Because some kidney transplant patients may require a pancreas transplant at the same time or afterward, the Henry Ford team provides each patient a personalized treatment plan with care delivered by experts in nephrology, endocrinology, transplant surgery, immunosuppression, nutrition, social work, psychology, and rehabilitation. With decades of experience, innovation in technology and research, and a multidisciplinary team focused on personalized patient care, the Henry Ford Kidney Transplant Program remains a top choice for patients with kidney disease.
