Henry Ford's Division of General Surgery has long been synonymous with innovation. Dating back to the 1920s, Henry Ford has been nationally recognized for the expertise and pioneering efforts of its surgeons.
Today, more than 20 surgeons perform 5,000 operations at Henry Ford Hospital and its surburban locations. Our surgeons frequently publish research testing the efficacy of the latest surgical approaches. Our commitment to the research in surgical techniques means patients have access to the most advanced treatments.
Henry Ford's Division of General Surgery is committed to treating patients in the highest quality setting. Our program has been recognized by several agencies for outstanding quality and outcomes. For example, we've earned the state's highest grades in patient safety and quality from the Leapfrog group, an independent quality measurement organization.
In addition, we have earned Health Grades' highest rating of five stars for complex gastrointestinal operations, including esophageal surgery, gastric and small bowel surgery, and pancreas surgery.
The Division of General Surgery sees a broad range of patients - from traditional to complex cases - and records more than 12,500 visits annually. In addition to its 70 surgical beds, Henry Ford Hospital houses a 40-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit staffed by surgical intensivists around the clock. As a Level 1 trauma center, Henry Ford Hospital has immediate operating room access for seriously injured or critically ill patients.
To provide the most accurate evaluation, our surgeons employ advanced diagnostic techniques to diagnose and treat patients. Whenever possible, surgery is performed using minimally invasive techniques - where the surgeon operates through 3 or 4 tiny openings about the size of buttonholes, while viewing and treating the patient's organs through a TV monitor. Research has shown that these procedures lead faster and easier recovery times for patients with good clinical outcomes.
