Herbal and Nutritional Therapies Using nature'
s power and strength to your advantage
"Let thy food
be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food. Hippocrates, considered the
father of modern medicine, recognized thousands of years ago the healing power
of food. Our nutritional experts will guide you through the mass of information
to tailor a nutritional program that will support you in healing and optimizing
wellness. When nutrition alone is insufficient to allow for healing, nutritional
and herbal supplements may be recommended by our staff.
Eastern countries such as China and India have appreciated and benefited from
the powerful healing properties of herbs for thousands of years. In fact, many
of today's pharmaceuticals originated from plants. For example, digitalis, used
to treat congestive heart failure, initially came from the leaves of the
foxglove plant. Taxol, a drug originally from the yew tree, is a promising
medication for certain types of cancer. Now, the Center for Complementary &
Integrative Medicine harnesses that power for you by offering safe and
appropriate use of herbs and nutritional supplements.
More than 50 percent of Americans regularly use one or more
supplements. Among the most widely used herbs in the United States are
echinacea, St. John's wort, gingko biloba, garlic, saw palmetto, ginseng,
goldenseal, aloe, Siberian ginseng and valerian. Studies have shown that herbs
such as echinacea and goldenseal may help boost the immune system.
Research also shows that garlic may help in the prevention of heart disease and
cancer, and ginkgo biloba extract may enhance memory. The practitioners at
the Center will work with you to determine which herbal and nutritional
supplements and nutritional program would be best for you.
