Cancer of the Head and Neck

Head and neck cancers represent about 3.5 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in the United States each year.  These cancers can occur in the mouth, throat, salivary glands, sinuses, skull base and thyroid gland.  More than 90 percent are squamous cell carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract.

This year an estimated 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with a head and neck cancer. Most cases are found in people over the age of 40. People who use tobacco or drink alcohol excessively are at higher risk than others to develop the disease.

Approximately 95 percent of cases are directly linked to smoking and alcohol.
Our head and neck surgeons perform both excision of tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract and reconstruction of the defects, including state-of-the-art free-tissue transfer to maintain adequate function and quality of life.
