Organization

Henry Ford Health System is a Michigan not-for-profit corporation governed by a 21-member Board of Trustees. Advisory and affiliate boards comprising 150 Trustee volunteer leaders provide vital links to the communities served by the System. Henry Ford Health System is managed by President and Chief Executive Officer Nancy Schlichting.

Henry Ford Health System is one of the nation's leading comprehensive, integrated health systems. It provides financing and health care delivery, including acute, specialty, primary and preventive care services backed by excellence in research and education. Founded in 1915 by auto pioneer Henry Ford, it is committed to improving the health and well-being of a diverse community.

Hospitals

Henry Ford Hospital  - A 903-bed tertiary care hospital, education and research complex in Detroit’s New Center Area. The hospital is recognized for clinical excellence and innovations in the fields of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics and sports medicine, organ transplants, and treatment for prostate, breast and lung cancers, among others. Its Emergency Department is a Level 1 trauma center.

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital - A 379-bed community teaching hospital serving the Downriver and western Wayne County communities. It offers a full range of clinical services, including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and cardiac care. Wyandotte also provides physical medicine and rehab, ambulatory surgery, inpatient behavioral services, hospice care, 24-hour emergency care, community education and health screening programs. Its Center for Health Services in Brownstown Township provides primary and specialty care, medical imaging, ambulatory surgery, 24-hour emergency care and other services.

Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals - A group of hospitals serving Macomb County. Henry Ford Macomb, with 435 beds hospital in Clinton Township, offers cardiovascular, cancer and 24-hour emergency care, inpatient rehabilitation, women's health, ambulatory surgery and medical imaging. Henry Ford Macomb - Warren Campus, with 203 beds in Warren, provides 24-hour emergency care, surgery, endoscopy, medical imaging, inpatient and outpatient rehab, a sleep lab and weight management.

Kingswood Hospital - A 100-bed hospital in Ferndale offering inpatient care for child, adolescent and adult patients with acute episodes of mental illness, 24-hour intake, dual diagnosis, intensive outpatient programs and day-hospital care.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital – Nestled on 80 tranquil acres in Oakland County, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is a community hospital offering subspecialty care and unique benefits to patients, their families and the community. With nearly 300 beds, including a labor and delivery wing and several operating rooms, the hospital is designed to bring the best medicine has to offer to patients.

Henry Ford Cottage Hospital -  A 175-bed hospital in Grosse Pointe Farms in Wayne County. It serves as a primary destination for outpatient and specialty inpatient services, which include 24-hour emergency care, ambulatory surgery, a women's diagnostic center, physical rehab, mental health, radiation therapy for cancer care, radiology, cardiac and pulmonary rehab, a wound care center and a sleep lab.

Henry Ford Medical Group

The Henry Ford Medical Group is one of the nation’s largest group practices, with 1,000 physicians and researchers in 40 specialties who staff Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford medical centers. Henry Ford Hospital has more physicians listed as “Top Docs” than any other hospital in metro Detroit in the book America’s Top Doctors. Henry Ford's nearly 30 medical centers are located in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties. Three medical centers provide 24-hour emergency care and ambulatory surgery and are primary care stroke centers. 

The Medical Group is a national leader in using e-Prescribing, an innovative electronic computer program that allows physicians to write prescriptions from a personal computer or wireless device and send them directly to a pharmacy. It has proven to improve patient safety, increase generic medication rates, and reduce costs for the patient and health system. E-visits, another innovative program, allows patients to communicate with their physician via e-mail.

The Medical Group is the only physician group in Detroit selected to participate in Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Physician Group Incentive Program, which uses financial incentives to meet certain care improvement guidelines for diabetes, asthma, congestive heart failure and coronary heart disease.

Clinical Excellence

Heart and Vascular Institute - A leader and innovator in comprehensive care, research and education offering one of the nation's largest and most successful heart failure and transplant programs. Specialties include electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, rehab, cardiac and vascular surgery and preventive services such as Heart Smart® education.

Josephine Ford Cancer Center - One of the largest cancer centers in Michigan provides a variety of services in six treatment facilities throughout southeast Michigan, including the Henry Ford Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery Program, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical oncology and support groups.

Henry Ford Transplant Institute - The institute is one of the nation's busiest for heart, lung, kidney-pancreas, liver organ and bone marrow transplantation, and one of only two multi-organ transplant centers in Michigan. It also has its own organ donor awareness program called LifeShare.

Maplegrove Center - A nationally recognized chemical dependency program for adolescents and adults at the West Bloomfield medical center offers residential (50 beds) and outpatient treatment. Maplegrove and Kingswood Hospital are part of Henry Ford Behavioral Health, which also includes the Department of Psychiatry and seven outpatient clinics located.

Neuroscience Institute - One of the top programs in the country that includes a National Institutes of Health stroke care and research center, a comprehensive epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease treatment and surgery program; one of the largest neurosurgery spine programs in Michigan; and the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center.

Orthopaedic Surgery - Team doctors for the Detroit Lions, the department cares for patients with a variety of bone and joint ailments, including osteoporosis, and provides the latest advances in joint replacement. The motion analysis lab allows researchers to analyze how bones and joints work together following injury.

Vattikuti Urology Institute - One of the leading prostate cancer programs in the world where patients have access to the some of the most innovative technology and treatment options. It performs more laprascopic procedures using robotic technology for treating prostate cancer than any other center in the world - more than 3,500 to date.

Community Care Services

Services include Henry Ford Health Products, a medical supply retailer; Henry Ford Medical Center Pharmacies and Fairlane Pharmacy Services, which provides IV therapy and medication to long-term care facilities; Pharmacy Care Management, which manages medication for patients; Greenfield Health Systems, a dialysis and blood therapies provider; Lifeline, an emergency-alert system; Henry Ford Extended Care, a private-duty nursing service; Henry Ford Home Health Care, a Medicare-certified home health care agency; Occupational Health, which provides workplace injury prevention, evaluation, treatment and safety; Center for Senior Independence, an alternative to nursing home care for the frail elderly; Henry Ford Continuing Care Corporation, with nursing homes in Harper Woods (153 beds) and Roseville (172 beds); also included in Community Care is Hospices of Henry Ford. With programs in Clinton Township, Detroit, Plymouth, St. Clair Shores, Warren and Wyandotte, Hospice also includes Kaleidoscope Kids®, a pediatric hospice program, and SandCastles, a grief support group for children and their families; Henry Ford OptimEyes, in partnership with Eye Care Services, provides a full continuum of eye care in southeast Michigan; Josephine Ford Cancer Center-Downriver, located in Brownstown Township, provides clinical and support services for cancer patients in the Downriver region.

Health Alliance Plan

Health Alliance Plan (HAP) serves more than 2,800 employer groups and 540,700 members. HAP is a nonprofit managed care organization that facilitates health care coverage through a variety of commercial products and government programs: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Point of Service, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Exclusive Provider Arrangement, consumer driven products, health savings accounts and Medicare Advantage. HAP’s commercial HMO received excellent acreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Alliance Health and Life Insurance Co.’s PPO received full accreditation from the NCQA. Research and Education

Teaching, research and advanced patient care make Henry Ford Health System a premier academic medical center. Affiliated with Wayne State University's School of Medicine, Henry Ford provides innovative physician training programs and collaborates on leading-edge medical research.

Research studies - More than 150 medical specialists and research scientists, including more than 60 full-time researchers, are involved in several hundred individual research projects. Subjects include stroke, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, sleep disorders, diabetes and lung diseases.

Research funding - More than $60 million in annual funding is received from internal and outside sources, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other governmental sources, businesses and private foundations. Henry Ford Health System ranks in the top 6 percent of all institutions granted funding by the NIH and the U.S. Public Health Service.

Education – More than 4,000 physicians, nurses and allied health professionals attended more than 70 special continuing medical education activities. Many more attended grand rounds and other weekly or monthly conferences at Henry Ford Hospital. These include: graduate medical education, which attracts 624 physicians-in-training in 20 specialty and 17 subspecialty programs; undergraduate medical education for more than 700 medical students; allied health, which offers training in 16 specialties; nursing education, which offers bachelor’s, master’s and second-degree programs; and continuing medical education, which provide ongoing training for physicians, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists and nurses.

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital-Warren Campus conduct training programs for about 100 osteopathic interns and residents in 12 specialties. More than 50 osteopathic students are on monthly rotation, and daily, weekly and monthly education programs are held for trainees and staff physicians at both hospitals.

Community Partnerships

Henry Ford develops innovative ways to address the social, economic and educational issues that affect the health of the community throughout metro Detroit. These include:

Institute of Multicultural Health - Studies the disparities in health care among people of color and finds solutions for getting early diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Clinic - Provides primary care services to more than 3,500 uninsured Detroit residents every month. Henry Ford Health System physicians staff the two clinics, which are located in southwest Detroit and in the New Center Area.

School-Based Health Initiative - Provides students access to a health care clinic in 14 Detroit and suburban schools, including primary care, dental services, mental health and health education. The program has demonstrated better attendance and test scores by students.

Virginia Park/Henry Ford Hospital Non-Profit Housing Corporation - Begun in 1975, the program is a joint venture of Henry Ford, Virginia Park Citizens District Council and the City of Detroit to provide housing for people with low and moderate incomes.

Center for Health Services Research – Conducts research focusing on outcomes, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of such diseases as cancer, diabetes, asthma and congestive heart failure as well as common acute conditions.
