Established more than 75 years ago, Henry Ford Ophthalmology is one of the largest practices in the United States and provides convenient, high-quality and compassionate care. We continue to be the largest provider for eye care in metro Detroit, with more than 125,000 patient visits each year. Our ophthalmologists are board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and have access to the most advanced equipment and technology.
Our dedication to research keeps us on the forefront of advanced treatment. The department currently is involved in clinical trials ranging from glaucoma to refractive surgery and retinal research to quality of life issues involving visual function.
Additionally, we are committed to training the next generation of ophthalmologists. Our top-notch graduate medical training program prepares five new residents and up to five fellows each year to provide the highest quality care that is expected at Henry Ford Department of Ophthalmology.
We also offer a full spectrum of specialty services, including:
Henry Ford’s Visual Rehabilitation and Research Center, the first of its kind in Michigan, working with individuals suffering from vision loss that cannot be improved by corrective lenses, medical therapies or surgical treatments. This unique program helps people with low vision make the most of their remaining eyesight through the combined services of an ophthalmologist, an optometrist and seven occupational therapists. Training occurs in our centers, as well as in the patients’ homes.
Medical/surgical sub-specialists whose area of expertise ranges from pediatric eye care to cosmetic eye surgery and neuro-ophthalmology.
Henry Ford refractive surgeons who offer a wide variety of advanced refractive and laser vision procedures for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatisms, including LASIK, PRK, CK and lens implants.
Henry Ford OptimEyes optometrists at locations throughout metro Detroit who provide optometric examinations and optical services. Our optometrists and ophthalmologists are partners in eye care, providing complete, coordinated care to patients close to home.
Our department also has a Visual Diagnostic Unit dedicated to providing state-of-the-art testing services. Our highly-trained specialists and technical staff are available to assist referring physicians in diagnosing and managing eye disease, particularly retinal disorders, glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmic disease.
